chongqing.JPG (24422 bytes)This "Mountain City" is bustling with activity typical in this part of the country. Overlooking the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing is the most important transportation hub of southwestern China. In centuries past, it was a major north-south land route that connected with Western shipping routes to carry precious cargo back to Europe. Today, it retains much of the charm and character of a port city of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but with few tourists. The region's many attractions include Nanwenquan Park (South Hot Spring), 15 miles south of the city. Along the Flowery Creek you can take a picturesque boat ride, and then take an excursion to the delightful Caves of the Fairies. Historical Red Cliff Village and the Luchan Temple are other popular attractions.
